Who sells extended car warranties in Canada?
Three kinds of seller, and the differences matter more than the brand names.
- The dealership's own offer — typically presented in the finance office on delivery day, often solid coverage, but you're comparing nothing against nothing, and pricing has room built in for negotiation most buyers don't use.
- Big national warranty brands — buy direct online or by phone. Quality varies enormously; the brand you see advertised most is not automatically the one that pays claims best.
- Dealer-operated warranty services (that's us) — licensed dealers who quote coverage from established Canadian program administrators, the same way they would for an in-store customer, but online. You get the dealer-grade programs without the finance-office ceremony.

Six things decide whether a policy pays when you need it; price is the last of them.
- Coverage style. "Exclusionary" (everything is covered except a short list) beats "named component" (only what's listed is covered). If a policy is cheap, this is usually why.
- Claim limits — per repair visit and in total. A $3,000 total limit can be exhausted by one transmission. Look for per-visit limits of $5,000 or more and total limits of $10,000+. Our programs run up to $10,000 per visit and $20,000 total depending on plan. SWAP: claim limits when custom program lands
- Where it's honoured. The right answer is any licensed repair facility in Canada (ours are — some also cover the continental U.S.). If coverage is tied to one dealership or chain, that's a leash, not a warranty.
- Who pays the shop. Best case: the administrator pays the repair facility directly and you only cover your deductible. If you pay and claim it back, you're the bank.
- The deductible. A flat per-visit amount (ours is typically $100) is simple and predictable. Watch for per-component deductibles — one visit, three parts, three deductibles.
- Insurer backing and transferability. Ask who stands behind the program financially, and whether coverage transfers if you sell privately (ours does — it genuinely helps resale).
What questions should I ask before buying an extended warranty?
These six, in writing, before any money changes hands — and yes, ask us the same ones.
- Is the coverage exclusionary or named-component, and can I see the exclusion list before I pay?
- What are the per-visit and total claim limits, in writing?
- Can I use my own mechanic anywhere in Canada?
- Does the administrator pay the shop directly?
- Is there a waiting period before I can claim, and is there an inspection first?
- What's excluded that surprises people? (Honest answer everywhere: maintenance items, wear items like brake pads, and pre-existing conditions.)
What are the red flags with a car warranty company?
Any one of these is reason to walk away.
- Pressure to buy on the phone "before the price changes." Real quotes hold — ours are honoured for 7 days.
- No written sample contract until after payment.
- Prices with tax mysteriously folded in, or "today-only" discounts.
- A company that won't say who administers claims or backs the program.
Ask us all six questions. The answers come in writing, with the price, and the price holds for seven days.

Common questions
What is the best extended car warranty in Canada?
The best policy is exclusionary coverage with per-visit claim limits of $5,000 or more, honoured at any licensed repair facility in Canada, with the administrator paying the shop directly and a flat deductible around $100. Judge providers against those criteria rather than advertising volume.
Are third-party extended warranties legitimate in Canada?
Yes — established programs are administered by Canadian companies backed by major insurers, and are the same products many dealerships sell in their finance offices. The key is checking who administers claims, what the limits are, and reading the exclusion list before buying.
Is a dealership extended warranty better than a third-party one?
Not automatically. Dealership offers are often strong coverage but rarely price-compared. A dealer-grade program bought online covers the same repairs at any licensed shop — you're not tied to the selling dealership — and you can compare before committing.
Can I get an extended warranty without buying it at the dealership?
Yes. You can buy coverage directly, at or after vehicle purchase. Note that on vehicles past their factory warranty a short inspection is usually required first, and a brief no-claims waiting period may apply.
On the sales floor since 2014, operating partner in 2020, and majority owner and Dealer Principal of Sault Nissan since 2024. He started Auto Warranty Experts on a gap he kept seeing from the finance desk: coverage is easy to buy the day you buy the car, and two or three years later — when the factory warranty is actually about to run out — most of the market has no straightforward way to buy it at all. Online he can put several programs in front of one customer and shape the term, coverage and deductible around the vehicle in front of him, rather than selling whatever a single desk happens to carry. "Clients are often shocked by how affordable a warranty can be through us. That's our whole purpose." What he likes most is the long game: relationships that last, built on service worth coming back for. About the team →
